England U16s kick-off their Sky Sports Victory Shield campaign with a trip to Chesterfield next month where they take on Northern Ireland on Wednesday 12 October.

England will be looking to retain the Victory Shield for the 11th time in a row and Head Coach Kenny Swain is excited about his new generation of talent ahead of this season's opener.

“I have to say it is an exciting time when the Victory Shield comes around," said Swain. "It is a fantastic opportunity for people to go to the matches and see the best young English talent coming through our system.”

Sky Sports will televise the game live from Chesterfield’s B2net Stadium as the ‘stars of the future’ from England and Northern Ireland will be on show.

Earlier in the year, England U19s drew a crowd of nearly 10,000 in the first international at the new stadium against Germany and former European Cup winner Swain is hoping for another big turnout to see the Young Lions.

“In this part of South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire there is a big catchment area for football, with a lot of professional clubs and a real interest for the game in what is a passionate football area," he added.

"I visited the stadium when the U19s team played here in February and the crowd were magnificent on that occasion.”

The Victory Shield is steeped in history, with players such as Michael Owen, Wayne Rooney and Jack Wilshere all shining in the tournament in previous years. The competition also involves Scotland and Wales and good crowds are expected to come out and support all four nations.

“The games in this tournament are always competitive, we always have to be at our best and this year will be no different," said Swain.

"The teams involved play some great football and our new crop of youngsters and all the staff are really looking forward to be playing Northern Ireland so we hope to put on an entertaining performance for the Chesterfield crowd.”
