GB Cerebral Palsy team to take part in World Cup.

Great Britain’s Cerebral Palsy team will participate in the BT Paralympic World Cup in May in the build-up to the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

The event will take place at Sport City in Manchester between 22 and 26 May and will showcase the best elite international athletes in various sports such as athletics, wheelchair basketball, boccia and seated volleyball, approximately 100 days before the start of the Paralympic Games later in the year.

The four day competition will see the Team GB side battle it out against tough competition, with teams being made up from around the globe representing the Americas, Europe and the rest of the world.

The seven-a-side tournament will be played with the usual modified FIFA rules, the elimination of the offside rule and permission for one-handed throw-ins. Matches will consist of two 30 minute halves, with a 15 minute half-time break.

Jeff Davis, Performance Manager for Team GB, said: “We are delighted to be participating in the Paralympic World Cup as our final tournament prior to the London Paralympic Games. It will be our final chance to ensure we are on track for the games against quality opposition and hopefully show the desire, skill and passion of the GB Cerebral Palsy squad.”

The World Cup will be managed by Fasttrack on behalf of the International Paralympic Committee, British Paralympic Association and Manchester City Council whilst The FA will be managing the football competition.

Channel 4, the London 2012 Paralympic Games host broadcaster, will provide coverage of the event – The broadcaster has already supported the GB disability football teams with features on That Paralympic Show over the last 12 months.
