Sammy Lee paid tribute to England Under-21 Coach Peter Taylor after taking hold of the reigns for one match and guiding the Three Lions to a 1-0 win over the European Champions.

Justin Hoyte's 12th minute goal put England in front against Holland on Tuesday night and it was a lead they held on to well after showing their defensive discipline in the 4-5-1 formation that proved a success in the UEFA qualifiers.

In fact, England looked more likely to extend their lead with the tireless forward running of David Nugent and pace of Theo Walcott and Wayne Routledge causing problems, while defensively Lee's men kept the Dutch at bay.

"It was a full vindication of the job that Peter Taylor has done" said Lee. "At times, when we were under pressure the players kept their discipline, rode it through and could have won the game more comfortably.

"The lads showed application and attitude in abundance. It's like a club situation and that's down to Peter and they have given him the biggest gee-up that he has ever had in that he can go away, leave them for one game and it will be safe for him."

"But I do want to stress that I am totally committed to Bolton. I am very grateful to them for letting me come away with the Under-21s and I'm very happy to have been in charge for a good result which gives everyone a lift."

Lee was also full of praise for Tottenham's Tom Huddlestone, who stood in as skipper for the injured Nigel Reo-Coker.

He added: "It was a captain's performance, but it was all about the team's performance and the spirit and commitment among the players is so strong."
