7.05pm kick-off, (8.05pm local time)
Justin Hoyte says his pre-match premonition came true after his first half strike proved the crucial match-winner as England Under-21s came away with a 1-0 victory over Holland.
The Arsenal defender was rewarded for a late surge into the penalty box when Holland keeper Boy Waterman fired the ball straight into his path and he made no mistake chipping the ball into the back of the net.
Hoyte was celebrating his first Under-21 goal but reveals he had a strong feeling that he was going to be among the scorers as he was preparing for the game.
Hoyte said: “That was a great result for us and everyone played really well.
“I don’t get many goals, but I carried on my run and thankfully I managed to score. I said to my family that I was going to score and I did so I am really happy.”
Preston North End striker David Nugent put in a man of the match display as he was asked to lead the forward line on his own.
Nugent feels the formation is working really well for his side and this latest result will give the players a great deal of confidence as they prepare for the European Championship Finals next summer.
Nugent said: “It was hard playing upfront on my own but I am getting used to it now.
“This result is a massive boost for us. We had a lot of withdrawals from the team, but the players who came in did an excellent job against the European Champions.”
Stand-in coach Sammy Lee paid tribute to the players after the 1-0 win in Alkmaar and feels there is a great team spirit running throughout the squad.
Lee said: “All the boys did really well and showed great focus. It was vital for us to score early on and keep a clean sheet.
“This is a great tribute to Peter Taylor with the players going out and getting a result. There is a great team spirit with the England Under-21s.”
