Under-21s coach Peter Taylor hopes England's victory over Argentina can inspire his side to victory

ENGLAND Under 21 coach Peter Taylor is hoping the seniors’ impressive victory over Argentina can help springboard his Young Lions into reaching the European Championships next summer.
Taylor reveals the entire Under 21 squad took a major lift from England’s impressive 3-2 win over Argentina and wants to keep the feel-good factor running through English football.
England’s Young Lions face a mouth-watering second leg clash against France in Nancy on Tuesday night after the two sides fought out a 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane last Friday.
And with the prospect of Head Coach Sven-Goran Eriksson flying out to North East France to see them in action, Taylor sees no reason why his side cannot come away with a memorable victory.
Taylor said: “We saw a video of the Argentina game and everyone was delighted. It meant a lot to everyone and everyone's feeling much better about themselves. When England seniors win a game like that...the young players here are really up for it.
“Sven is definitely coming to the game on Tuesday and that is brilliant. The players will enjoy him being here. We talk quite a lot about players. Sven takes a big interest. He asks me about certain players and I will tell him about certain players who impress me.
“Players will be fighting hard for one of those positions in the squad. Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney will take some shifting but you need an alternative from the bench and that's what they'll be looking for.”
Although Taylor was disappointed with his side's first-half display against France last Friday, he took a number of positives from the final 45 minutes and hopes England can build on that in the return leg.
Darren Ambrose was on hand to grab a vital equaliser just three minutes from the end and Taylor knows his side will have to be at their very best throughout the 90 minutes if they are to upstage the French in their own backyard. Taylor added: “This is probably one of the biggest games of my managerial career with England. I am absolutely desperate to get to the finals.
“Not only will it be a great education for the players but those born in 1983 will be too old to carry on, so they can extend their Under-21 careers and play in the finals. I feel we can play a lot better that we did on Friday. I have no doubt if we are positive and not make silly mistakes we can do it. The players are very confident.
“This is a dangerous score for both teams. France know we are capable of scoring and they will be nervous of us doing that. It will be a close match but we won't be doing anything silly too early. If it's 0-0 on 80 minutes then it will be a kitchen sink job.”
Taylor has promised to impersonate Norman Wisdom on the flight home if his side qualify for the Championships next summer.
Taylor is renowned in the game for taking off the comedy legend, but is yet to bring his class of comedy to the England set-up, although that could well change on Tuesday night.
He said: “Somebody gave me a little hat at Tottenham last Friday and asked me to do the Norman Wisdom impression. I said I will only do it if we beat France, so if we achieve that I will do it on the plane on the way home.”
