Peter Taylor believes England’s Under-21 stars will be favourites to qualify for the UEFA U21 Championships if they can win in Azerbaijan tonight.
England’s youngsters already have nine points in the bag after three consecutive victories against Austria, Poland and Wales in their qualifying group. And with two teams to go through to the finals in 2006, Taylor is in confident mood.
"We’re looking forward to this one," he said. "Azerbaijan will be a different style to Wales in our last game, but they often play 4-5-1 so in some ways it is the same formation.
"Perhaps they are more of an unknown quantity but we just have to get out there and be positive.
"As it is the top two to go through in our group I think we would be within touching distance of qualifying if we could get another win. That’s a big incentive for the lads."
Taylor has been impressed with his team’s performances so far and although there are two tough matches against Germany to come, he is certain England can progress.
He said: "Having played Poland and Austria away and won both games it gives us a good chance.
"There’s still Germany home and away to come, and that’s not easy. But I would think Germany and Poland will be our main rivals to qualify and we have every chance."
The only problem for England tonight is that striker Carlton Cole is missing because of a twisted ankle - and Darren Bent, who has scored seven goals in nine games as a substitute for the Under-21s, has also picked up a late injury.
"We may have to look at playing Jermaine Pennant up front," said Taylor. "Or I could give James Milner a free role.
"It's a blow because if we had known about Darren's injury or even had an idea before we left we could have called somebody else up. But that's life.
"Everybody is up for the game. And if we can get another three points we would be in a very strong position in the group with several home games to come."
