Glenn Johnson in action for the Hammers.
Thursday, 10 July 2003.
An offer from Chelsea for West Ham defender Glen Johnson was accepted by the Upton Park club on Thursday morning and paves the way for the 18-year old to make the switch across London, and with it a return to the Premiership.
The England Under-21 star made a name for himself last season as he became one few plus points from an otherwise disappointing season for the Hammers, which saw them relegated on the final day. A swift return to the top flight with the Blues would make him the first new signing at Stamford Bridge under their new owner, Roman Abramovich.
A statement on West Ham's official website on Thursday said: "West Ham United can confirm that following discussions with Glen Johnson and his advisors, we have accepted an offer for an undisclosed transfer fee from Chelsea.
"Glen has been given permission to discuss personal terms with Chelsea."
Johnson spent two months on loan across the river Thames at Millwall during the first half of last season and on his return to Upton Park was soon thrown in the deep end by Glenn Roeder to help out a leaky defence.
His debut against Charlton on 22 January was followed by 14 more outings for the Hammers, and his assured approach and confidence in the claret and blue also caught the eye of England Under-21 Coach David Platt.
After already representing his country at Under-15, 16, 19 and 20 level, Johnson made the step up to the Under-21s in March and earned two caps shortly after versus Turkey and Serbia & Montenegro.
He'll now be speaking to Chelsea and his development next season could continue in the Premiership and the Champions League.
