England Under-21 captain continues his exclusive diary from inside the camp at the European Championships
David Dunn reflects on a satisfying victory in England's first match and looks forward to Monday's clash against Italy.
We spent most of yesterday recovering from Friday's match. It was such a fast game and the air was really warm and humid which took a lot out of the players. It was almost like a Premiership game and will probably be the highest tempo we'll play in this competition.
We spent a session in the pool just relaxing our muscles and doing some stretching and so on. The lads who didn't play went to the training ground to do some shooting practice and got drenched, so we were quite happy where we were.
It was brilliant to get a win under our belts and the draw between Italy and Portugal means a win against the Italians will see us through to the semi-finals. All the lads played really well and we showed a lot of mental toughness throughout.
We couldn't have wished for a better start and to get such an early goal settled us nicely. Both Jermain's and Crouchy's goals were great finishes but there were fantastic performances everywhere. The Swiss really came at us towards the end after their goal when the crowd really got going. We had to be disciplined to hold on for the win and everyone pulled together. People have said some nice things about my individual performance but the important thing is that it was a real team effort.
I'm aware that there is talk in the media of me being on stand-by for the World Cup, but to be honest I've never really thought about the senior team that much. I never really believed all the hype and just concentrated on the Under-21s and winning this championship. To play for your country at any level is huge honour, and to be captain even more so.
Now we’re gearing up for Italy, which we know will be a very tough game. They are the reigning champions and a lot of people rate them among the favourites. However, the weather has become more "English" since Friday. It's been overcast and rainy and the temperatures have dropped a lot. As a Blackburn lad it doesn't bother me too much though, and many of the lads actually prefer these conditions.
We'll have a look around the stadium this afternoon to get a feel ahead of the game. It's a brand new stadium and everyone says how good it is. That extra bit of familiarity helps on match-day. If the playing surface is as good as the one in Zurich we'll be delighted, and if we get the same result we'll be even happier.
