Peter Taylor was satisfied with his side's performance in the Toulon Tournament.
Saturday, 11 June 2005.
England U20s coach Peter Taylor believes there are plenty of positives to take from the Toulon Under-20 Tournament, where his side finished in third place.
England dominated their Third Place Play-Off match against Mexico but were nevertheless indebted to David Nugent's injury time goal which gave England
a 1-1 draw and took the game to penalties, where England triumphed 3-2.
Few would have denied England that victory as, had it not been for a heart-breaking defeat in the semi-final penalty shoot-out against France, Taylor's side would have been playing in the final.
"The togetherness of the group was excellent and I thought we played well," Taylor said after the match against Mexico.
"We had a lot of people here who hadn't been with one of the international squads before so it has been a worthwhile exercise," he said.
Those involved with England for the first time were Colchester United's Greg Halford, Hull City
defender Scott Wiseman, Barnsley goalkeeper Scott Flinders, Tom Soares of Crystal Palace, and Preston North End's Nugent.
And for Taylor, the key for these players as with all the others in the squad, is to build on the experience that this tournament has given them.
"They've got to grab the opportunity," he said. "They've got to learn from it, and they mustn't stand still now. They've got to work even harder to make sure they get invited to the next Under-21 squad."
Plenty of the England players impressed and none more so than Tom Huddlestone, who received one of the individual honours, decided by man-of-the-match nominations from coaches, journalists, scouts and the organising committee throughout the competition.
Huddlestone, who leaves Derby County to join Tottenham Hotpsur this summer, looked composed on the ball and from his performances,
both in defence and midfield, few would have imagined him to be one of the youngest members of the squad.
"He's shown a very good attitude and has played very well here," Taylor continued.
"He can play in both positions and we're still not 100% sure which is his best.
"The Premiership will be a big test but he's a good footballer and I'm hopeful he'll be a success there."
