Toulon Tournament
Stade Mayol, Toulon
13 June 2003

England suffered a severe defeat at the hands of Argentina on Friday night in the second match of their Toulon campaign and coach Les Reed remained realistic in defeat.

"We have some very good Under-20s but we don't have them here in Toulon," said Reed.

"We are up against the very best of other countries. We have a lot of good players who have moved up into the Under-21s under David Platt and two in the full squad under Sven-Goran Eriksson.

"I have no fears we have fallen behind when we have players like Carlton Cole, Michael Tonge and many others who would all be out here."

Reed admitted the 8-0 defeat by Argentina was humiliating.

"It was a very bad day at the office," he said. "It was not very pleasant to watch that many goals going into our net. It was not satisfactory.

"You have to put the tournament into perspective, we have a very young team while Portugal and Argentina have brought their strongest teams."

The dismissal of Birmingham's Darren Carter had a major effect against Portugal.

"Against Portugal we did well up to half-time but we had a man sent off for the whole of the second half and it took a lot out of the lads with the heat.

"Last night we started well and then Argentina scored and the heat and tiredness came into play.

"But it was a massive blow to our confidence and we need to build for the next game."

England face Turkey on Sunday. Kick-off is 5pm English time.
