Russia 0-1 England
European Under-19 Championship
First Qualifying Round
Mini Tournament Group 8
Saturn, Ramenskoye
24 September 2003
England progressed to the European Under-19 Championships second qualifying stage in style on Wednesday after finishing off their Group 8 mini-tournament with three wins from three games...
Having already beaten Liechtenstein and Andorra earlier in the week without conceding a goal, Dick Bate's young lions sat in second place in the table on goal difference behind tournament hosts Russia, who were also victorious against the same opponents.
Both teams had already ensured their safe passage to the next phase, but Wednesday's encounter in Ramenskoye would determine the winner of the group.
It never looked like being a high-scoring affair with both defences unbeaten in the two previous matches, and at half time a goalless draw was hardly unpredictable.
However, in the second period, England grabbed the advantage and held on to take the win. Manchester City striker Dorryl Proffit came on from the bench to score the game's solitary goal with 17 minutes left on the clock, and send England home with maximum points and the confidence of a zero in the goals against column.
