The Hammers recalled the 18-year-old defender this week just five days after he signed an extension to stay with the First Division side.

Johnson started seven games for Millwall, but Glenn Roeder may well be keen to use him as West Ham look to force their way off the bottom of the Premiership.

The experience that the England Under 19 captain has gained will be invaluable to Glen and West Ham, as he looks to follow in the successful footsteps of Rio Ferdinand through the Hammers youth set up.

Millwall boss McGhee told Millwall's website: "We always agreed with West Ham they would be able to call him back if their squad was under pressure and that seems to be the case now.

"I have no doubt he will emerge as a first team player for them very soon. He showed a tremendous amount of ability during his time here."
