Denmark 4-0 England
Nordic Tournament
3pm, Saturday 05 August 2006
Torshavn, Faroe Islands
England were denied victory in the final of the Nordic Tournament after Kenny Swain's youthful lineup came up against a Denmark side in flying form.
Despite losing their final game of the tournament the Three Lions can hold their heads high after a successful campaign that saw them record three straight wins - including a notable win over Faroe Islands under-19s.
The Nordic Tournament provides the first step up for last season's group of players from the under-16s setup, with Kenny Swain taking charge of the players as they seek to progress through the England ranks.
With some fine performances and exciting attacking football being played, this experience will undoubtedly stand these young players in good stead for the future - with The FA International Tournament at the end of August the first chance to prove it.
England got off to the worst possible start when Christian Lund Gytkjaer put the Danes into the lead with just two minutes on the clock, it became an uphill struggle when the clinical striker bagged two further goals to give Denmark a 3-0 half-time lead and earn himself a hat-trick.
After the break England managed to show their spirit in adversity as they sought to overcome the deficit but it was not to be their day as Thomas Juel-Nielsen put the icing on the cake with just eleven minutes left.
The scoreline in the final should not deter the young Lions when they look back on this week, as much has been gained and the courage and conviction they showed in their play will only serve them well.
