Nordic International Tournament,
England Under 17 Group A Fixture at Kvarnvallen Wednesday 31st July 2002, 7pm kick off (6pm bst)
Faced with the tough prospect of host Sweden in their own back yard, John McDermott's men put on a dazzling performance from the start which culminated in Norwich youngster Ryan Jarvis bagging four goals on the way to a 5-3 win.
England dominated much of the first half and were rewarded midway through when a sparkling show of possession football - a thirteen pass move - gave Jarvis the chance to break into the box and finish off well.
The young lions continued to control proceedings and were two-up moments later when Jarvis again rounded off another fine move, this time his turn and dribble created the space to stroke home.
The home side did manage to get a few crumbs from the floor and pulled one back, but the young canary swooped for his hat-trick converting a penalty after Leon Fisher was hauled down by a Swedish defender whose misdemeanour was rewarded with an early bath.
By half time Jarvis had his fourth, loitering with intent in the goal mouth and tapping in a left wing cross from his spot six yards out.
England were always a threat and when they grabbed their fifth in the second half it was no more than they deserved, and it came courtesy of some training ground ingenuity. From a well worked set-piece of the right hand side, Kyle Nix delivered a teasing cross for the incoming Fulham boy Liam Fontaine to introduce his head to the ball before dispatching into the net.
Though the hosts did manage two late goals after England relaxed a little, the earlier dominance and attacking class was too much for them to overcome and afterwards coach John McDermott was 'very pleased' by the way the boys took three more points; "It was an outstanding team performance for 65 minutes in what was tricky circumstances,
"We were up against the hosts and it was an intimidating atmosphere with the national anthems before kick off, but the boys reacted well."
He added, "We played some exciting football and two of our best moves were rounded off with great finishes from Ryan Jarvis.
"I was pleased for him, he had a good game and he done very well to get two more goals, a piece of individual skill and one from the penalty.
"But I was impressed with the overall team display for just over an hour and we will aim to take that with us into the next few games."
