First Goal

After making his full first team debut for Ipswich Town in 1995 aged just 17, Richard’s England career also began to blossom. He has represented the Three Lions at youth, Under 21, ‘B’ and Senior levels, with his first cap arriving under Kevin Keegen against Malta in June 2000. Only one more England appearance has followed, against Holland at White Hart Lane, despite being involved in a number of squads.

Arsene Wenger made a swoop for the Suffolk-born stopper taking him to Highbury for £6 million. Richard earned a Premiership champions medal with 22 appearances for Arsenal during 2001/02 but was largely kept on the bench with England legend David Seaman holding down the number one jersey. Soon, however, Richard moved north to Everton when David Moyes signed him in July 2002.

Wright earned a recall to Sven's England squad for the 2003 matches with Australia, Liechtenstein and Turkey following a string of impressive performances for the Toffeemen and was on the standby list for the Euro 2004 campaign.
