Michael Owen's double strike against Russia in last month's Euro 2008 qualifier at Wembley took him up to a career total of 40 goals for England.
Even before this season, Owen was well-established in fourth place in the all-time list of England scorers. Now he has the legendary Jimmy Greaves, one place above him, in his sights.
Greaves notched 44 goals in his 57 internationals. He scored on his England debut in a friendly in Peru in 1959 and was unstoppable in the 1960-61 season, racking up a record 13 goals in eight matches.
Here are details of the incomparable Greavesy's most prolific season:-
N Ireland 2-5 England - two goals
Luxembourg 0-9 England - three goals
England 4-2 Spain - one goal
England 5-1 Wales - two goals
England 9-3 Scotland - three goals
Portugal 1-1 England
Italy 2-3 England - one goal
Austria 3-1 England - one goal
He twice got four in one match - against Northern Ireland in 1963 (won 8-3) and Norway (won 6-1). But, finally, the goals did dry up towards the end of his eight year England career as he only managed one strike in his last eight internationals.
Greaves was 27 then, the same age as Owen is now. But the latter is still amongst the goals and has time on his side in which to overtake Greaves (44), Gary Lineker (48) and Sir Bobby Charlton (49).
