Stewart Downing says that playing against Brazil in front of a capacity crowd will take England to Estonia with the confidence to get the all important victory.

The Middlesbrough winger came on for the last half an hour, replacing Joe Cole on the left flank, and almost conjured a spectacular opener moments before John Terry scored.

With the England players disappointed not to beat the five-time World Champions in an enthralling contest, Downing believes that can only help when they play in Tallinn on Wednesday.

Downing told TheFA.com: "We played ever so well and the lads are devasted in the changing rooms, because Brazil are a great team but I think we were the better team today.

"It was all set for a great game and we got that. Two great teams, two sets of great players, and I don't think we let anyone down today, we put on a good show."

Asked whether it gives the Three Lions confidence for their next match Downing said: "I think it does, massive confidence. We go to Estonia to win."

Downing was full of praise for captain John Terry, the man who made history by scoring England's first goal at the new stadium.

"He has a knack of scoring important goals, JT's obviously a threat at set pieces and I thought he did ever so well again today. He popped up when it was needed.

"Obviously it's going to be tough against them with the players they have, but we held them well on the counter attack and I thought we caused them some problems as well."
