England winger Shaun Wright-Phillips has started the new season on fire and Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho believes he is set for an outstanding campaign. That's why he was our England Player of the Weekend.
Wright-Phillips was named man of the match for Chelsea's 3-2 victory over Birmingham on Sunday and has also been impressive in their pre-season campaign.
It's good news for the former Manchester City winger who has taken time to become a first team regular at Stamford Bridge following a big-money move two years ago.
Mourinho said: "I think the first season in a big club coming from a club without the same conditions and responsibility and without the same pressure is always a question mark for every player.
"And I think the first season at Chelsea was not easy for Shaun. But in the second he had a big improvement, his choices on the pitch and the way he thinks about the game is much better.
"He is a team player - and I’m very pleased he had an impressive performance against Birmingham.
"He is the kind of boy that deserves it. Some players after one bad season they don’t resist and they want to leave. But the boy always believed in himself."
Wright-Phillips has always been popular at Stamford Bridge, both with the club's fans and with his fellow players. And Mourinho believes he is set to reap the rewards of his good attitude.
He added: "The dressing room loves him too because he was always a team player and whether playing from the start or in the last few minutes or even in the stand he was always the same person. So I’m very very happy he had this very good performance."
