England Head Coach Steve McClaren has vowed to use last week’s friendly defeat to Spain to help motivate his team ahead of next month’s pivotal European Championship Qualifier in Israel.

McClaren and his players were heavily criticised following the 1-0 loss at Old Trafford and the England boss accepts it’s now time to deliver.

"We’re analysing the game and looking at the game and making sure that we all, ourselves and the players, learn from that and take it forward," he said.

"The best accountability is within…the biggest thing is what we’re actually going to do about Israel.

"We are looking for a reaction. Yes, we’ve been criticised. We lost a game of football. We’ve been criticised individually, collectively. We have to use that.

"When people say: ‘Does that affect you?’ It gives you that anger, that determination that we’re going to prove people wrong. That’s the reaction that I want from the players. That's the reaction I want from myself.

"I want them to keep feeling that until we meet up for the Israel game."

While McClaren believes that England have a team capable of winning the European Championship, his focus now is wholly on qualification for Austria and Switzerland, a matter he believes will not be settled for a while yet.

"One thing that we’ve got to remember is that we are four games into this qualifying campaign," he said. "Whatever happens, nobody qualifies in March. Qualification comes in the last two or three games.

"We’ve got three away games coming up and the next one’s always the most important and it is Israel. We are going there to win but no one qualifies in March. Qualification comes in November.

"Now we have to deliver. We have got the squad, the players, the staff, the coaching staff and myself to deliver that. I have no reservations about that whatsoever."

He may have experienced more than his share of criticism over the last few days but McClaren is acutely aware that actions rather than words are what’s required when England take to the field in Tel Aviv.

"Let’s stick to reality and say we have to deliver now," he confirmed. "Yes, we can do better. Yes, we have to do better. Yes, we want to do better.

"We have to have players out there with the character to handle situations like Israel away. Stick together and we will have no problems."
