VIDEO: England in training

The England team take to the training field for a light session ahead of the friendly game with Spain.

England and Spain have met 20 times in full internationals and the first match, which Spain won 4-3 in Madrid in 1929, was England's first defeat to a country from Continental Europe.

Another little piece of England history was made when the teams clashed again in Madrid in 1965.

England won the December friendly 2-0, Arsenal's Joe Baker and Roger Hunt of Liverpool scoring in each half, and an excellent England performance was the perfect way to go into a New Year so important for English football.

Within eight months Alf Ramsey's England were World Champions.

There was an incident on the half-hour in the famous Santiago Bernabeu Stadium that ended with a new entry in the England record books.

Joe Baker, the England No.9 who had notched a clever goal after just ten minutes, pulled a leg muscle and limped off to be replaced by Norman Hunter.

Hunter, the tough Leeds United defender, became the first England player to make his debut as a substitute.

England remained comfortably in control of the match and deservedly clinched victory with a second goal, Hunt turning the ball in after a mesmerising move involving Bobby Moore, George Cohen and Moore again.

We could now move with confidence into 1966.

England Squad Update:

On Monday Andrew Johnson, Wayne Bridge and Chris Kirkland withdrew from the England squad to take on Spain.

Johnson is suffering from an ankle problem, Bridge has a thigh injury and Kirkland a shoulder injury.
