Steve McClaren said he was delighted with England's performance against Holland despite the fact his side was pegged back by a late equaliser.

Wayne Rooney's first half effort from Joe Cole's pinpoint cross looked set to give the Three Lions the victory in Amsterdam, before Rafael van der Vaart earned the Dutch a draw with a close range strike near the end.

But McClaren was pleased with the display of all his players in the friendly international, and in particular debutant Micah Richards at right-back.

"We are so disappointed not to win because we had enough chances and we were the best team on the night," the Head Coach said.

"We asked for a performance of character and attitude and I thought we played good football and created chances.

"That was probably our best performance over 90 minutes in terms of consistency. Holland are a good side and they have got great movement, but we coped with that and once we settled down I felt we were very comfortable defensively.

"Micah Richards has only been with us for two days, but it is like he has been a member of the squad forever. He gave a mature performance and he really is one for the future."
