England Player of the Weekend

Steven Gerrard has been named as TheFA.com's England Player of the Weekend after scoring a crucial winning goal as Liverpool overcame Manchester City at Anfield.

As the game wore on it became increasingly likely that Stuart Pearce's resillient team would frustrate the Reds, until the intervention of Gerrard that secured the vital win.

The Liverpool skipper thrust forward to intercept a loose pass in the Blue defence before firing home in typical fashion from 20 yards out. Celebrating in front of the Kop it was clear to see just how significant the goal was - both to Gerrard and the Anfield outfit - as they look to get their season back on track domestically.

Fellow England midfielder Michael Carrick was also in fine form at Old Trafford as Man Utd came up against reigning Premiership Champions Chelsea.

Despite the contest ending level at 1-1, Carrick was instrumental in much of United's positive approach play in the first half, and showed his defensive qualities as Chelsea fought back in the second period.

Jermain Defoe was on the goal trail for Tottenham Hotspur as they came from behind to defeat Wigan 3-1. Taking the ball from his strike partner Dimitar Berbatov, Defoe turned superbly before guiding the ball past Chris Kirkland with his left foot.

Aaron Lennon continued his fine performances for Tottenham and capped his display with the third goal for the home side which sealed victory for Martin Jol's side.
