John Terry has promised to match the passion of the England fans out on the pitch after being named as the new Three Lions captain.

The Chelsea defender is well aware how much support the national team receives wherever they play - and believes it is important he embodies that spirit whenever he puts on the armband.

Terry explained: "I want to win things for our country. We've got the most passionate fans in the world and we're passionate people. The players are passionate about winning and that's something that we certainly want to bring to the team.

"I am ready for this role. The level of expectation is obviously a lot higher but I'm prepared for that. It's about all of us. We're all in it as a nation together. And that's what we want to do moving forward. It's about all of us and we're all moving in the right direction.

"I've been given this once in a lifetime opportunity and I am going to make the most it and I want to do things my way.

"But I've learnt from people like David Beckham who was a great captain, and from great captains at club level who I have learnt off.

"I've taken bits of their games put them into mine. With all that together I can hopefully make a great captain for England.

"When I got the news from Steve McClaren on my mobile I was just getting a massage. I was just speechless for about five minutes and I didn't know what to say.

"But I'm just so excited to be given this great opportunity. It hasn't really sunk in properly. For the next few days it's just about me taking it all in."
