Stewart Downing Post Match

Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing gives his thoughts on England's flying 4-0 victory over Greece at Old Trafford.

Stewart Downing told TheFA.com of his excitement at making his first start for England and revealed his delight at the overall performance of the team.

Downing wore the number 11 shirt during Steve McClaren's first game as England Head Coach, and he explained just what McClaren was seeking to get from him in terms of balance and width.

"The key was getting the ball to me and Stevie (Gerrard) as early as possible and I think with Stevie took up some good positions in the centre while I held the width," Downing said.

"It was important to keep it going and not let the standards drop and I think it worked well.

"I feel brilliant, when I found out I was starting the game I was really excited. It was a great start and a really strong performance and we're all really pleased."
