Fulham manager Chris Coleman, who first made his name as a defender with Crystal Palace, has plumped for a fellow centre-half.

"I would have to say John Terry. He’s been magnificent and I think he’s terrific. If somebody said to me I could go and buy one player, any player, he’d be the one."

Martin Ling, whose Leyton Orient side made the headlines in this year’s FA Cup, including a wonderful 2-1 victory over Coleman’s Fulham, voted for last year’s winner, Frank Lampard.

"I would have to say Frank Lampard. He was voted second best player in the world and that says it all.

"He’s a midfield player who influences games and scores goals. As soon as I thought about who should be Player of the Year, Lampard and Wayne Rooney were the players that went through my head.

"And for me Lampard just about nicks it."

Luton boss Mike Newell has selected another midfielder, this time Liverpool dynamo Steven Gerrard.

"My England player of the year is Steven Gerrard, no doubt about it. He's the best midfielder in the country and has such drive. He's a fantastic player."
