The Charlton boss believes that the key to a successful England team is to get both of them playing on top form ahead of this summer’s World Cup in Germany.

"It’s definitely either Gerrard or Lampard," he said. "Gerrard was on a mission last year, he really wanted to win something with Liverpool.

"Chelsea had never won anything before but Lampard carried them to the summit. Both players were scoring vital goals from midfield for their club and country, so it was difficult to pick between the two."

It is likely that the two superstars will form England’s midfield partnership at the World Cup so Curbishley, along with the rest of the country, will be hoping that the two remain on this form.

Last year saw Gerrard captain Liverpool to the club’s fifth European Cup success, while Lampard played every game in Chelsea’s march to the Premiership crown.

Curbishley is predicting the future to be just as bright for Gerrard especially in 2006, saying: "This year I think Gerrard will edge it, but the most important thing is that we get both of them playing well in the same England team."

England fan Graham Turrall, from Reading, believes Paul Robinson should win the award.

"Paul has established himself as England’s number one at an amazingly young age for a goalkeeper – a position where it is generally accepted players have to get well beyond 30 before they reach their prime.

"To put this into perspective only the great Peter Shilton had won more caps by the age of 26. If Robinson stays fit and in form then he could be England's number one for the next ten-12 years."

"Paul has clearly got himself into the shape of his life, and is now able to transfer his impressive club form onto the bigger stage. He has made a number of excellent saves throughout the qualifying campaign. A marvellous showing against the Argentines at the end of 2005 was his icing on the cake."
