Steven Gerrard will take every chance he can to brush up on potential World Cup opponents.
Gerrard to take notes
By Daniel Freedman. Wednesday, 21 December 2005.
Steven Gerrard has spoken of his excitement at the World Cup next year and revealed that he will be studying our opponents over the coming months.
With matches coming thick and fast for Liverpool however there is little opportunity for Steven to study the players he may face, but he admits that in quieter moments he cannot help thinking of what lies in store in Germany.
"Obviously the England players are focusing on our club football at the moment but, at the same time, you can’t help thinking about it. It’s so exciting," Steven told TheFA.com.
Following eight successive victories in the Premier League, Liverpool travelled to Japan where they were unfortunate to lose in the World Club Championship final, falling 1-0 to Sao Paulo.
Steven did manage to get on the scoresheet with a stunning volley in their semi-final with Deportivo Saprissa.
Liverpool now have a busy Christmas period to look forward to, with two games in hand over Chelsea as they look to stay in touch with the league leaders.
Then they travel to Kenilworth Road in the Third Round of The FA Cup to face Luton Town. But Steven will still look to brush up on the players he could face in Germany wherever he can.
"I think between now and the summer any chance we get we’ll be sticking the TV on and watching these counties play and studying them," he told TheFA.com.
"We’ll see where they are strong and where they are weak. I’m sure the manager and coaching staff will be doing their homework too.
"The first tournament that I went to in 2000, I was just a young lad and it was about getting the experience. But I’m really looking forward to this one and I’m confident I can go there and do well.
"I still say the world hasn’t seen the best of me for England yet – although I have played some good games – but this is now a great stage for me to go there and do well."
