But what if you had to name the squad? And what if you had to name it now?

For a two week period we're putting you on the spot to name your 23, with a chance to win a pair of tickets for England's final World Cup qualifier against Poland in October.

We've got another line-up for you today as 29-year-old Rochdale fan Nick Rendake tells us who he'd have in his squad.

Here's his 23 and the rationale behind each selection.

The Squad

Position Players
Goalkeepers

Chris Kirkland, Paul Robinson, David James.

Defenders

John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Jamie Carragher, Gary Neville, Ashley Cole, Phil Neville, Sol Campbell, Wayne Bridge

Midfielders

David Beckham, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Joe Cole, Owen Hargreaves, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Michael Carrick, Kieron Dyer

Forwards

Michael Owen, Wayne Rooney, Jermain Defoe, Alan Smith

The Reasoning

Goalkeepers

Chris Kirkland - A class act whenever he has played. Injuries permitting, Kirkland and Robinson could be swapping the goalkeeping jersey for quite a few years to come.

Paul Robinson - England's no.1 at the moment, the Spurs man had an excellent season and is sure to go to Germany.

David James - His huge experience will prove to be invaluable to the younger two goalkeepers in the squad. Excellent player to have in the squad.

Defenders

John Terry - Terry has matured under Jose Mourinho and now has the experience of major domestic success. Looks to be one of England's best defenders.

Rio Ferdinand - The composure that Ferdinand's presence at the back brings to England is important, as is his pace and his ability to read the game.

Jamie Carragher - Outstanding in 2004/05 for European champions Liverpool, Carragher has to go to Germany not least for his versatility in defence.

Gary Neville - Neville is rapidly becoming a defensive legend for England - his record speaks for itself. Links well with Beckham down the right-flank.

Ashley Cole - The best left-back in the world, Cole is getting better and better for the Three Lions.

Phil Neville - Mr. Versatile, Neville is an important player in Sven's squad and should go to Germany.

Sol Campbell - Formed a brilliant partnership with Ferdinand, broken only by the unbelievable form shown by Terry. Should bounce back next season.

Wayne Bridge - Can be used as cover for Cole at left-back, or in midfield.

Midfielders

David Beckham -
The captain goes into his third World Cup with a vast amount of experience. Back Becks to shine in Germany.

Frank Lampard - One of the best midfielders in Europe over the past two years, Lampard scored three times at Euro 2004 and is feared by opponents.

Steven Gerrard - Took Liverpool to Champions League glory and if he can gel with Lampard in the centre of England's midfield, we could be going places.

Joe Cole - Has come on in leaps and bounds over the last year. Will definitely go but will he start?

Shaun Wright-Phillips - His form for Manchester City has been spectacular and, more importantly, consistent. Should go along to offer something different.

Michael Carrick - You need midfielders who can sit in front of the back four and protect the defence - Carrick is one such player.

Kieron Dyer - Needs to have a settled season to get his chance as Stewart Downing will put him under pressure for this place in the squad.

Owen Hargreaves - Either Hargreaves or Jenas for this last spot in the squad. The Bayern Munich man gets it because of his experience.

Strikers

Michael Owen - Still England's leading goalscorer, Owen will be playing in his third World Cup next summer and will again be threatening opposition defences.

Wayne Rooney - A brilliant player who is at his best on the big stage. Expect him to score a few in Germany.

Jermain Defoe - A live-wire upfront, Defoe will be first alternate should Owen or Rooney need to come off or suffer an injury.

Alan Smith - Just gets the last place ahead of Heskey and Crouch. He can hold the ball up and is passionate about playing for his country.

So what do you think of Nick's squad? Agree? Disagree? Has he made a glaring omission? Has he justified his selections?

If you can do better, send your 23 and the reasons for it to Editor@TheFA.com and, if it's good, we'll run it. One of the best selectors will win a pair of tickets to England v Poland. So get choosing! Entries accepted until Friday 01 July.
