Superstar of the 1970s: Malcolm Macdonald in action for England.
Wednesday, 22 June 2005.
Malcolm Macdonald scored six goals in his 14 appearances for England, including a record-equalling five in one match.
His goal tally against Cyprus in a European Championship qualifier in April 1975 equalled the five-goal hauls that Willie Hall, against Northern Ireland in 1938, and Howard Vaughton, against Ireland in 1882, had managed.
Macdonald was a prolific goalscorer wherever he plied his trade, though he struggled to hold down a place in the England side, winning 14 caps between 1972 and 1975.
The London-born Macdonald started out at his local side Fulham where he scored five goals in 13 matches.
He then moved on to Luton Town from where, after managing 49 strikes in 88 games, he left the capital for St. James' Park.
At Newcastle Macdonald netted 95 goals in 187 games before earning a transfer back to London where he starred for Arsenal, scoring 42 goals in 84 matches.
