Liverpool captain Gerrard was inspirational as his team beat Chelsea 1-0 in the semi-final on Tuesday on what was an incredible night at Anfield.

Now he has set his heart on winning the trophy and holding it aloft in Istanbul.

The England star said: "I really didn’t believe this could happen and it’s amazing. To lead the boys out in the Champions League final will be the proudest moment of my life. I am looking forward to it so much, it will be brilliant.

"The fans were just fantastic against Chelsea, the atmosphere was amazing and it was a great night. The best of my career, no doubt about it."

But Gerrard wasn’t the only hero on show at Anfield. England teammate Jamie Carragher was immense at centre-back and produced another sterling performance.

Former Liverpool manager Roy Evans, who helped bring Carragher through at Anfield, was hugely impressed.

He said: "There have been some great performances over the season and last night every man that played was fantastic.

"But like everyone else you have to pick out Carragher. He was absolutely terrific. It brought a lump to my throat having seen him come through over the years. He is a fantastic player."

The man himself is already looking to put Liverpool's name on the Champions League trophy – and he doesn’t care whether it's AC Milan or PSV Eindhoven they have to play against.

Carragher said: "It was an amazing night for us, really special. The scenes at the end were superb, but we all realise we haven't won anything yet.

"There's one more game left to win. I don't care who we play. It's going to be tough, but now we want to make sure we use this win as the platform to win the whole competition.

"We are very confident. We're in the final because over two games that's where we deserve to be. We have nothing to fear."
