Rooney, who scored a spectacular 25-yard volley for United and collected the PFA Young Player of the Year award on Sunday, feels the Games would be great for British sport.

"Having the Olympics in Britain would be great for getting kids involved in sport," he told http://www.london2012.org/.

"Seeing the world's best athletes in action would be really inspiring and anything which encourages children to be more active gets my support."

Meanwhile Phil Neville, on signing the flag created by Sport England in the North West, was relishing the prospect of Olympic football in the region.

"It would be brilliant to see Olympic Football at Old Trafford," he said.

"The Commonwealth Games in Manchester showed how much people in the North West love their sport, and the facilities we have in the city are fantastic."

Stuart Kellett, Regional Director for Sport England North West, urged football fans from all over the UK to back the bid.

"London's bid to host the Games is not just about bringing the world's greatest sporting event to the capital city," he said.

"The real winners won't just be the sports stars, or even London - the whole of the UK will benefit.

"It's great to see some of Manchester United's biggest stars supporting the bid, especially as Old Trafford is set to host part of the Olympic Football tournament if London wins the bid."

The FA Chief Executive Brian Barwick said: "The 2012 Olympics in London could be a major boost for sport in this country, including football.

"Apart from the Olympic football tournament at some of our best grounds, and the Final at the new Wembley, the legacy of the Games should be more interest in sport, better facilities and more people participating, which is something we are passionate about."
