Umbro's new design will be worn by the team for the next two years and at the 2006 World Cup in Germany should Sven-Goran Eriksson's side qualify.

England will wear it for the first time in the World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland at Old Trafford on Saturday.

One of the main features on the shirt is a gold star which commemorates England's World Cup triumph in 1966 and it has won universal approval: "The star means a lot to me and I think the kit will improve the team. It looks very good," said captain David Beckham.

"It is still a thrill to put on the England shirt. It is the dream of many young players."

Striker Michael Owen added: "It's fantastic. This is the latest developed kit and it feels great.

"The star commemorates our World Cup win but I hope we add another one to it soon."

While, 'keeper David James, sporting the new-look goalie strip, said: "It's very nice and I can't wait to wear it. The players have had a say in what it looks like."

England Women's international and Birmingham City left winger Rachel Yankey, was there to reveal the women's version of the kit, which will be worn by Hope Powell's side in this summer's UEFA European Women's Championship: "This will make it a lot easier for us to play in," she enthused.

And Chelsea captain John Terry concluded: "I think the design and improvements will help.

"It is getting lighter and more comfortable. It will absorb the sweat and Umbro have definitely improved it."
