The lionheart centre-half held the Carling Cup aloft in Cardiff after his side beat Liverpool 3-2 in a dramatic final at the Millennium Stadium.

And now the Three Lions hero believes Chelsea can go on to win the Premiership and maybe even the Champions League.

Not bad for a side who were said to be wobbling after losing to Newcastle in The FA Cup and to Barcelona in Europe last week!

He said: "It’s a great feeling. Now we’ve got this one we can go into the other competitions with a lot of confidence and hopefully win those as well.

"To bounce back after two defeats is great. This is a massive cup and we’ve shown we want to win silverware. This is the start of our trophies and we can build on this."

Terry was one of four England stars in the Chelsea side in Cardiff, with Frank Lampard, Joe Cole and Glen Johnson also playing a major part in their victory.

But it was a miserable day for Three Lions teammate Jamie Carragher - and even worse for Steven Gerrard, who scored a 79th minute own goal to cancel out John-Arne Riise’s opener and send the final to extra time.

Further goals from Didier Drogba and Mateja Kezman won it for Chelsea, with a late consolation effort from Liverpool’s Antonio Nunez.

Gerrard said: "Yes, it hurts. Losing cup finals and scoring an own goal is a bad day for myself. But I'll look forward to the next game now and bounce back."

Three Lions striker Wayne Rooney, however, had a better weekend. He believes the title race is back on after his two goals helped Manchester United beat Portsmouth 2-1 on Saturday.

The Euro 2004 hero produced two superb finishes to help United narrow the gap at the top of the Premiership to just six points. Now Rooney is hoping they can catch leaders Chelsea.

He said: "We need them to slip up but it can happen. The most important thing today was to get three points. If Chelsea slip up we’ll be ready."

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson added: "Wayne was fantastic, on song all the time.He never stopped wanting the ball, never stopped trying to do things. He’s a winner."

Rooney tucked home a neat first goal for United from a cross by England teammate Gary Neville. And after Portsmouth had equalised through a superb volley from England U21 captain Gary O’Neill, he hit the winner, superbly latching onto a Ruud van Nistelrooy pass before leaving the keeper for dead and rolling the ball calmly home.

England new boy Andy Johnson scored two penalties to help Crystal Palace beat his old club Birmingham 2-0. Manager Iain Dowie said: "Penalties are an art and Andy is very good at them. And with AJ he also gets them as well as scores them."

England midfielder Kieron Dyer hit the winner for Newcastle on Sunday as they beat Bolton 2-1. Lee Bowyer had scored the opener for the Toon Army, while Stelios equalised for Bolton.

England Under 20 striker Danny Graham scored the leveller for Middlesbrough as they drew 2-2 with Charlton.

Elsewhere, former England U21 star Peter Crouch scored for Southampton in their 1-1 draw against champions Arsenal, who had a last minute Ashley Cole winner ruled out for offside.

At White Hart Lane, Paul Robinson and Ledley King kept another clean sheet as Spurs beat Fulham 2-0.
