Chelsea midfielder Cole admits there are no excuses for losing 4-1 in Copenhagen but says the result will only make players more determined in future.

England face two crucial World Cup qualifiers away to Wales and Northern Ireland next month as well as home clashes against Austria and Poland in October.

Cole said: "It was frustrating and very, very disappointing to lose the game in the manner we did. We didn’t play well, let’s not try and put any other face on it. And we got punished by a very good side. But we have to look forward. We’ll learn from what happened and come back a better side.

"My message to the fans is just that sometimes these things happen. It’s a good little wake up call for us, if you like.

"People have been talking about us as possible World Cup winners but we’re not even there yet - we have to qualify first.

"We have to certainly put in better performances than we did this time if we are going to do it.

"Lots of things went wrong, I could stand here all night talking about them. But it wasn’t good and lucky for us it wasn’t in a qualifier.

"We’re very, very determined to put it right and we’re going to take it out on Wales when we play them. We have very big games coming up now in Cardiff and against Northern Ireland and we have to win them."
