LION OF THE WEEEKEND: The Manchester City star joins the lead in our Lion of the Season poll after his match-winning display at Portsmouth.
Shaun made it clear after his racist torment in Madrid on Wednesday that he wanted to "let his football do the talking". And he was as good as his word in a thrilling display at Portsmouth on Saturday.
The England player scored the first and created the last goal in Manchester City’s 3-1 win at Fratton Park and in the process earned his third Lion of the Weekend nomination, a tally he shares with Stewart Downing in our search to find Lion of the Season.
Wright-Phillips took only six minutes to make his mark. A slip by Portsmouth defender Dejan Stefanovic was seized upon quickly and he buried a low cross-shot into the far corner.
From then onwards, his energy and vision were a key component of City’s win.
He challenged to take the ball back from Pompey in the closing stages, and started the move which ended with Paul Bosvelt hitting the third goal.
Former England captain Mick Mills, one of our five TheFA.com judges, says of Wright-Phillips: "There is nothing better in football than seeing young talent come through, and he is one of the best of his generation.
"He has shown the right character to come back from an unpleasant experience and have a major impact for his club on the football field."
City boss Kevin Keegan hails Wright-Phillips as the best young player in England; we can now add bravery all to his other qualities.
