Neville admits it was a disappointing night for the Three Lions following a 1-0 defeat. But he says no-one should forget just what an impressive team they came up against at the Bernabeu.

He said: "It was a strange atmosphere and a strange night, but it was a pretty special Spain performance. I thought Xavi was fantastic for them. They passed the ball so well and that's what we should be talking about.

"Spain had a lot of time on the ball and got into good positions, they were tremendous.

"As for us, it was a friendly game not a World Cup tie and that's our only saving grace to be honest."

Captain David Beckham admits it wasn't a performance to remember.

He said: "I enjoyed being England captain at the Bernabeu but I didn't enjoy losing the game. There weren't too many positives, other than we didn't get many injuries. That's about it, really.

"It was very disappointing because we know we can play a lot better football than that and I think all the players were disappointed with the performance.

"Credit to the Spanish team and the Spanish players because they played fantastically tonight. But it's not one we will want to remember."
