Frank Lampard Sr was delighted by his son’s goal for England on Saturday but he wasn’t the only player to catch his eye.

Rio Ferdinand was superb on his international return after an eight-month ban barely giving Wales a sniff of goal as England won 2-0 at Old Trafford.

"Rio was a colossus, I thought he was outstanding," said Lampard Sr. "I know Wales played only one up front but John Hartson is a good player and he didn’t get a chance."

Ferdinand and Sol Campbell have lost only twice in 20 internationals together and the old firm didn’t give Wales a chance.

The Manchester United star even had time to make the occasional forward run.

"Rio is a huge talent - it was like he’d never been away," agrees Lampard.
