Steve Gerrard of Liverpool is the reigning Lion of the Season but judging by the opening weekend of this campaign, there are a few contenders to take his crown this time.

TheFA.com will ask an England international to choose the Lion of the Weekend and 1982 World Cup skipper Mick Mills found it hard to separate four players.

"Nicky Butt showed there is life after Manchester United. He made a very impressive debut for Newcastle at Middlesbrough," says Mills.

"And there were good Sunday displays from Ashley Cole of Arsenal and John Terry, who was Chelsea's man-of-the-match against Manchester United.

"In the end though, I have gone for Shaun Wright-Phillips of Manchester City, who is in the England squad to face Ukraine on Wednesday.

"There is a big buzz about Shaun at the moment and he was the driving force behind Saturday's game against Fulham.

"England are strong on the right with David Beckham and Gary Neville but Wright-Phillips brings his own qualities to that position.

"He was energetic against Fulham and not afraid to run at defenders, something they hate."
