Rooney was outstanding as England beat Poland 2-1 on Wednesday to finish top of their qualifying group and head for the World Cup on a high.

But amazingly the Manchester United star hasn’t scored a competitive goal for the Three Lions since Euro 2004, when he banged in four to become one of the stars of the tournament.

His only goal since then came in the friendly defeat against Denmark in August, and now he is determined to put that right when it really matters.

He said: "It’s true, I haven't scored a competitive goal since Euro 2004. I hope I am storing them up for next summer.

"It is a massive tournament and I want to go there and try and do the best I can and score some goals."

With Rooney on form and Michael Owen at his best there is no doubt that England can have a strike force to be feared in Germany next year. And Rooney is full of praise for his team-mate, who hit the first goal against Poland this week.

He said: "Michael is a goalscorer. He has done it all his career for club and country. It is a dream to play with him and most of the time he is going to score goals for you.

"If he is firing next summer it will make a hell of a difference for England. He is a top player and everyone has got confidence in him to go into any game and score goals."

Rooney also had a word of praise for midfielder Frank Lampard, whose 81st minute winner against the Poles was his 10th already for England.

The striker said: "He is very important, Lamps has proved over the last few years how much of a good player he is for Chelsea. He scores goals and some great ones as well.

"He came up with another valuable goal and a great finish against Poland. Lamps is a great player. He scores goals, works hard and gets back and defends as well. He is the all-round midfield player."

Of course, Rooney’s not too bad a player either - and he was pleased with his all-round display against the Poles.

He added: " I was frustrated not to play on Saturday so it was brilliant to play again. I was happy getting out there and I was made up with the result. We won and that was our main priority, to top the group and put in a good performance.

"The attitude we showed was brilliant. We were already through to the World Cup but we wanted to top the group and we did it.

"I think the desire and work-rate has always been there but we played a lot better than in previous games. It shows what we can do."
