His responsibilities include continuing his involvement with Sven-Goran Eriksson and the senior team coaching set-up, as well as working with the coaches of the various national youth teams.

Sammy Lee said: "I am extremely excited by this opportunity to join The FA full-time and work with the best players in the country at various levels. I have had the privilege of working with Sven and the senior team over the past couple of years, as well as the Under-21s before that, and I look forward to building upon these experiences.

"While it was of course a wrench to leave Liverpool, where I enjoyed so many wonderful years as a player and coach, the chance to take up this new challenge was impossible to resist."

FA Director of Football Development Sir Trevor Brooking said: "We are delighted to have Sammy on board as a full-time member of staff.

"He has a huge amount of experience of international football, as a player and coach with both national and club teams. His background will help strengthen links between The FA and the clubs, as well as moving forward our coach education programmes."

Sammy Lee will take up his duties with immediate effect.

Sammy Lee profile

Sammy, 45, was an England international as a player, winning 14 caps as a midfielder in the early 1980s. He scored on his debut against Greece in a European Championship qualifier in 1982.

He began with Liverpool as a 16-year-old and was as passionate about the club as any player who has worn the famous red shirt. He went on to make almost 200 League appearances and won two European Cups, three League Championships and four League Cups.

He later played for QPR, Real Osasuna (Spain), Southampton and Bolton.

Sammy began his coaching career by taking charge of Liverpool’s reserve team, initially under Roy Evans. After Gerard Houllier had been appointed sole manager at the end of 1998, the reserves put together a late run that almost snatched the Pontins League title.

Sammy was promoted to share both First and Reserve Team duties with Jacques Crevoisier.

In the summer of 1999 he was linked with a move to Sheffield United but decided to concentrate on furthering his coaching credentials at Anfield.

Regarded as one of the most talented coaches in the English game, Sammy was a regular member of the coaching staff with the England Under-21 side before moving on to become a regular member of the Senior Team’s coaching set-up under Sven-Goran Eriksson.
