John Terry has set his sights on being a future England captain and promised the best is yet to come from him at international level.
The Chelsea skipper has been in imperious form for his club and has won praise as a stand-in for the injured Sol Campbell at the heart of the England defence.
But he believes he still hasn't done himself justice under Sven-Goran Eriksson's command and is eager to press his claims as Rio Ferdinand's partner while Campbell is sidelined.
"Hopefully I've put a doubt in Mr Eriksson's mind," said Terry ahead of Wednesday's World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan in Newcastle.
"During Euro 2004, I felt there were times when I could have done better. With the way I've been playing at club level, I don't really feel I've taken that on to the international stage yet.
"I don't think I've done anything wrong for England, but I don't think I've done the best I can. When you play at this level, it's a big step up and you need to be on top of your game.
"I think I'm a similar player to Tony Adams. As a boy I watched him. We're from the same background and we both always wanted to do well and better ourselves.''
As for the England captaincy, Terry stressed that David Beckham is still very much the man in possession.
He said: "I think I have the qualities to be captain, but we've got a great captain at the present time.
"He's special on and off the pitch and all the lads have great respect for him. It'll be a few years before anyone gets that armband off him.''
