The Manchester City scored a stunning individual strike that his dad Ian Wright would have been proud of.

Wright Senior was in the stands at St James' Park to see his boy race from the half-way line, leaving the Ukraine defence in his wake.

And the way he calmly strode into the area and sent an angled shot across the goal and past keeper Oleksandr Shovkovskyy was hugely impressive.

"I enjoyed it a lot, especially the goal," said Wright-Phillips.

"I remember I intercepted a pass and I looked up at Jermain Defoe but he was marked, so I realised I was one-one-one and just took it on.

"I went for goal, pushed it once and struck it across the face of goal and thankfully it went in. It was a great moment for me and I think my dad must have been proud!

"I wanted to make my mark on the game and hopefully I've done that."

England keeper David James believes his Manchester City team-mate can now go on to challenge for a permanent place in the England squad.

He said: "It was good to win after all the disappointment of the summer and there were a lot of positives.

"Shauny was outstanding and he's been playing like that for a long time for Manchester City. He's a young man and he's hungry and he's got real talent. The goal was typical of him and I think he's got a great chance with England.

"It will give him a lot of confidence and I think he can go a long way. He will get a lot of credit for his performance I think, and he deserves it. I was really pleased for him."
