Wayne Rooney looks back at England's performance against Wales in Cardiff

Wayne Rooney was pleased with England’s 1-0 victory against Wales on Saturday and says he enjoyed playing as the lone striker.

Sven opted for a five-man midfield in Cardiff meaning the Manchester United forward was leading the line for the Three Lions with support coming from the wide players.

He also had backup from the two central midfielders and Rooney says the system worked well.

"I liked it up there," said the 19-year-old, "Stevie G got close to me a lot of times and we combined well.

"It was good Frank and Steven were supporting me well, it made my job a lot easier and hopefully it can happen again sometime.

"It was a good formation and a good result."

Rooney added: "It was a tough game, I think we played well in the first half and were unlucky to come in at 0-0.

"[Joe] Cole getting the goal early on in the second half really helped us a lot and from there we just had to use our head a bit and try and see the game out."

Rooney was disappointed not to have put England into a half-time lead when his 21st minute shot was well saved by Danny Coyne.

"I should have done better and really should have scored, although it was a good save, but I should have scored."

The Burnley goalkeeper then foiled another attempt from the number nine in the second-half, which could have put the game beyond doubt.

"The keeper made it look a bit better than it was but it was a good save and I’m happy we won the game."
