Sven-Goran Eriksson insisted he will not resign as England's Head Coach after losing 1-0 to Northern Ireland and instead is determined to qualify for the World Cup Finals.

Eriksson admitted he was distraught after the Three Lions lost in Belfast and immediately apologised to fans for the display. But he is determined to see the job through.

He said: "I'm not going to resign. I am going to try to make it right, to look forward and try to win the last two games.

"This is my worst experience as England manager. Against Northern Ireland we should not even draw, we should win. Of course I am very sorry, disappointed.

"The players are sorry for the team, sorry for the three points and sorry for the fans who have paid money and want to see us playing better football and winning.

"We played exactly as we wanted to play for 35 minutes. We showed patience and created half-chances. But we lost patience and lost spirit. We didn't find it at half-time or in the second half and that's why we lost the game.

Although finishing as runners-up of Group 6 would still give England a chance of qualifying for the World Cup, either as one of the two best second-place teams, or through the play-offs, we must now beat both Austria and top of the table Poland to be sure of reaching Germany next summer.

And Eriksson knows it will require a better performance to make the nation's dream come true.

"That's what we want to do," he said.
