Liverpool's Steven Gerrard, who opened the scoring, said: "It was a professional job. We would have liked a few more goals but we're a step closer to the World Cup.

"The important thing before these two games was two take six points. We're in pole position and if we win the next four we're going to the World Cup.

"The manager has said this is the best squad he's had since he's been in charge, and that gives you a great boost as an individual.''

Skipper David Beckham grabbed the second goal and said: "It was like the game against Northern Ireland at Old Trafford.

"We had to be patient, but we knew we would always score a goal.

"It's been funny in the last two games where we've gone in 0-0 at half-time and come out second-half winners. It was important the players stayed strong and focused.''

Defender John Terry said: "They had a couple of long shots early on and a couple of half-chances, but we've kept a clean sheet and it was a good performance all round.

"Everybody expected it to 5-0 or 6-0 in both games. Over the two games we're very pleased.''
