The Three Lions bowed out of the competition last Thursday after a penalty shoot-out defeat to the hosts Portugal, but afterwards Sven applauded the fans, whose conduct during the two-week stay in Portugal was exemplary.

"I thought we had a good chance to reach the final. The players and the supporters all the way were fantastic.

"There were so many England fans in Portugal, the atmosphere at all four games was excellent."

Sven continued: "Even against Portugal, who were playing in their own country, it almost felt like a home game.

"It was amazing. I can only thank the fans."

UEFA also commended the attitude of the English fans: “When England played Portugal, there was a sprinkling of fans all over the stadium and there was an excellent atmosphere,” said William Gaillard, UEFA’s Director of Communications.

"Fans seem more aware of what is acceptable behaviour and what is not. Also we are seeing more families."
