Steve Gerrard in action for Liverpool against Newcastle at the weekend.
Gerrard is top Lion
By Joe Bernstein. Monday, 17 May 2004.
Liverpool’s captain said farewell to Anfield this season with an awesome display that almost wrecked Newcastle’s UEFA Cup hopes single-handed.
"Kept driving the team forward" – Gerard Houllier
"Wish he hadn’t come out for the second half" – Sir BobbyRobson
"Any team in the world would want him" – Gary Stevens, TalkSPORT
Liverpool captain Steve Gerrard has emerged as a truly world-class performer this season and he ended the Premiership campaign showing the full range of his talents.
From the opening seconds when he swept a crossfield pass to the feet of Michael Owen, Gerrard was a man in control.
The Anfield skipper turned up wherever he was needed, right flank, left flank, bursting into the penalty area.
And he showed outstanding vision to set up Owen for Liverpool’s equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Newcastle, splitting the defence with a pass that Owen volleyed in first-time.
If the pair can combine like that this summer, England will feel they can take on anyone at Euro 2004.
"Stevie was awesome again. In the next couple of years, he will move into the category of top 10 players in the world," said his club manager Gerard Houllier.
"He can do everything and kept driving the team forward against Newcastle. The impetus he brought to the side was picked up on by the other players."
No wonder Sven is pleased to have Stevie G around this summer.
