On a bumpy pitch in chilly Reykjavik an England side containing most of the fringe players for places in Ron Greenwood's 22 for the 1982 World Cup in Spain, achieved a draw against Iceland.

The home side had in some measure been responsible for Wales failing to qualify for Spain, drawing 2-2 in Swansea when the Welsh had been expected to win with ease.

England fell behind to a team which they had only previously played at amateur level after 23 minutes.

Edvaldsson crossed low for Gudjohnsson to shoot past Joe Corrigan from close range.

The goal followed a period in which the visitors had begun to settle down - and almost gone in front when Glenn Hoddle's free-kick was saved with difficulty, one handed by Baldursson - and they suffered another set-back five minutes before half-time when Regis had to be withdrawn with a recurrence of a groin injury.

The elegant Hoddle began to find gaps in the Icelandic defence after half-time, and in the 69th minute he set up a scoring chance for West Ham's Paul Goddard, wgho had come on to replace Regis.
