Following England's 1-1 friendly draw with Portugal in Faro on Wednesday night, TheFA.com takes a look at each of the 20 players involved for the Three Lions in our Player by Player analysis.
Starting Team
1 - David James
Made one strange looking aerial misjudgement shortly after King's goal but was assured with everything else Portugal put his way - though Pauleta's free-kick was just too good for the Manchester City stopper.
2 - Philip Neville
Steady forty-five minutes at right-back, didn't get forward much, but was comfortable defensively before Mills was given a run after the break.
3 - Ashley Cole
Busy for the first 17 minutes as he looked to go forward, but a niggling back injury forced him off, replaced by Bridge.
4 - Nicky Butt
Workman-like display from the Manchester United midfielder. Was never going to show the tricks of his opponents, but regularly got his foot in to prevent them from doing so.
5 - Ledley King
The Tottenham man was an impressive highlight of the game on his full-debut and was very solid at the back. Read the game well and gave Portugal little time in the box. One weak clearance did drop to the feet of Rui Costa, but his closing down forced the Milan ace to shot high and wide. Weighed in with a goal too, despite knowing little about it.
6 - Gareth Southgate
A strong performance from Southgate in his return to the squad, the Middlesbrough defender was there when needed and helped out James clearing from under the bar.
7 - David Beckham
As ever, the England captain was always involved, but in his club-mate's 100th cap for Portugal, was not the star of the show. When able to deliver his trademark crosses from an advanced position, he didn't disappoint - setting up England's goal - but his crosses from deep never really troubled Couto's back line.
8 - Paul Scholes
Still searching that elusive 14th goal for England, and was not handed an opportunity at Ricardo's goal during his 45 minutes on the pitch. Played simple passes and kept possession before being replaced by Kieron Dyer.
9 - Wayne Rooney
An energetic night for the Everton teenager eager to make something happen for England. Didn't really come off for him and was frustrated by the close attentions of the Portuguese defence. One chance from Couto's mistake surprised him into a poor first-touch.
10 - Michael Owen
Was generally kept out of the danger-zone by solid first-half Portuguese defending. One time his run did bamboozle, but his volley from Scholes' neat chip was always going over.
11 - Frank Lampard
Another 45 minutes of international football can only help the in-form Chelsea midfielder. Didn't dictate play as he does in the Premiership, but gave his defence an extra barrier for the Portugal attack to get past.
Substitutes
14 - Wayne Bridge (on for A Cole, 17)
Gave England width down the left and was happy to get forward in attack. Found himself behind the last defender for one of England's best chances of the game, but screwed his shot wide.
12 - Danny Mills (on for Neville, 46)
Stable second half in place on Phil Neville, kept defence his priority, and looked comfortable without doing the spectacular.
17 - Joe Cole (on for Lampard, 46)
Another option for England in the attacking midfield slot, Cole has it in him to tease opponents and open up defenders. His exuberance showed on one particular occasion, but his run ended tamely. Had a side-foot effort blocked by Ricardo's legs near the end.
18 - Kieron Dyer (on for Scholes, 46)
The strong-running Newcastle man was not as active in the final third as perhaps he would like to have been. Worked back to help out his defence and on the occasion he did have a chance to fire at Ricardo, squared instead to Cole whose shot was blocked.
20 - Emile Heskey (on for Owen, 71)
Didn't really get into the game as England's service up to the Liverpool man was limited. Dropped deep to collect often, but couldn't pose enough questions.
19 - Alan Smith (on for Rooney, 71)
A lively 20 minutes for the Leeds striker, he can only benefit from a run-out that saw him win a number of flick-ons. Was as committed as ever but will need more minutes before June.
15 - Jamie Carragher (on for Bridge, 86)
Little time to show too much coming in for five minutes at left back. Threw himself at one cross in his own full-blooded style and could prove a valuable and versatile asset in the future.
16 - Owen Hargreaves (on for Beckham, 86)
Again, with only five minutes to get a sweat on, couldn't get too involved, but helped out his defence as Portugal looked for a late winner.
21 - Jermaine Jenas (on for Butt, 86)
Five minutes and an England cap on his 21st Birthday, there's plenty of time ahead for the Newcastle midfielder.
