Jermain Defoe probably can’t believe what’s happened to him since joining Spurs.

Four goals in three games, talk of an upgrade from the England Under-21s to the full squad and part of the craziest results sequence ever seen.

Having watched Spurs throw away a 3-0 lead against Manchester City in The FA Cup, Tottenham have scored 12 goals in their last three League games – but still couldn’t beat ten-man Leicester on Sunday.

Indeed, it was only Defoe’s brilliant last-minute finish – his 18th of the season taking into account his West Ham goals – that earned them a 4-4 draw, despite leading 3-1.

It led to an unusual reaction from a two-goal hero. "I am devastated," said Defoe. "We were the better team throughout – I don’t know how we didn’t win."

Defoe’s first goal after 13 minutes showed his striker’s instinct, racing onto a Simon Davies pass and despatching a first-time finish past Walker.

Then, right on time, he proved Tottenham’s saviour – brilliantly controlling a Ledley King chip and shooting home in one movement.

Strike partner Robbie Keane has no doubts about Defoe’s quality. "He has shown for the past year what a quality goalscorer he is," said Keane.

"He’s proved that again since he came to the club."

The nomination of Lion of the Weekend is Defoe’s second of the season, taking him alongside James Beattie, Wayne Rooney and David Beckham – an illustrious list.

Paul Scholes is currently leading the way with four nominations.
